Principles of Extracellular Single-Unit Recording

چکیده
8 There is a rather large gap between membrane properties of individual neurons and behavior or physiological events. To bridge this gap, we need to be able to understand the activity of individual neurons and how that activity contributes to neuronal circuits. Extracellular microelectrode recording, which focuses on neuronal action potentials of individual neurons as the “code” used by the intact nervous system for transmitting information, is the method of choice for investigating questions at this level of analysis.

A new method for acquisition and analysis of single unit recording data
Single unit recording has been used as a well-known technique to study the electrical behavior of neurons. In this respect, the classical methods are rather expensive. In this study a simple and inexpensive method for single unit recording studies has been introduced. Computer sound card was used for data acquisition. Neural responses were saved via simple sound applicable packages and then ana...

متن کاملExtracellular Single-Unit Recording Methods*
Since their refinement in the early 195Os, extracellular, singleunit recording methods have been used to obtain a wealth of data about the properties of CNS structures. The applications of the technique have been diverse: extracellular microelectrodes have been used to map the potential fields of single discharging neurons in order to answer fundamental questions about the excitability of CNS d...
متن کاملAn evaluation of photoengraved microelectrodes for extracellular single-unit recording.
Microelectrodes fabricated using integrated-circuit technology are shown to be suitable for extracellular single-unit recording, and the factors influencing electrode-cell coupling are discussed. Electrode tip size as well as location is found to be critical in recording high spike amplitudes, suggesting that the paths for current flow in central nervous system (CNS) tissue may be extremely small.
متن کاملCapabilities of a penetrating microelectrode array for recording single units in dorsal root ganglia of the cat.
The recording capability of a microelectrode array in the cat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) was studied in 11 acute experiments, 373 single, discriminable sensory units were recorded on 587 electrodes (0.64 units/electrode). Sensory action potentials as large as 1750 microV were obtained (mean=132 microV). These were comparable to literature reports of the best DRG extracellular recordings made wi...
